Custom SMTP Email Connection

Connect your email to Bloom using SMTP to send invoices, contracts, and other business communications from your own email address.

Bloom supports direct integrations with Google and Microsoft, as well as custom SMTP connections for other email providers.

Before you begin

Using Gmail, Google Workspace, Outlook, Hotmail, Live, or Microsoft 365?

You don't need to configure SMTP manually. Bloom offers direct integrations with Google and Microsoft.

These are reference settings. Some providers offer additional ports or require specific authentication methods. Having the correct SMTP server settings does not necessarily mean your account can authenticate through a custom SMTP connection.

For Gmail, Google Workspace, Outlook, and Microsoft 365, we recommend using Bloom's direct Google or Microsoft integration instead.

Provider-specific requirements

Different email providers have different security requirements.

Yahoo Mail

Yahoo may require an app-specific password when connecting to third-party applications.

You can review your account's security settings to determine whether an app password is needed.

Proton Mail

Proton Mail offers SMTP submission for eligible paid accounts using custom-domain email addresses.

To generate an SMTP token:

  1. Sign in to your Proton Mail account.

  2. Open Settings → All settings → IMAP/SMTP → SMTP tokens.

  3. Select Generate token.

  4. Choose the email address you want to use.

  5. Generate and copy the SMTP token.

  6. Use the provided SMTP username and token when configuring your connection in Bloom.

Your regular Proton Mail account password cannot be used for SMTP submission.

iCloud Mail

Apple may require an app-specific password to connect your iCloud email to third-party services.

You can manage app-specific passwords through your Apple Account security settings.

Zoho Mail

Zoho SMTP settings may differ depending on whether you're using a personal mailbox or an organization-managed email account.

If you're unsure which SMTP server to use, check your Zoho Mail account settings.

Other email providers

If your provider isn't listed, look for its outgoing mail (SMTP) settings in its help center.

You will generally need the SMTP host, port, encryption method, username, and authentication password or token.

Troubleshooting SMTP connection issues

Unable to connect your email

If Bloom cannot establish a connection, check that:

  • Your SMTP host and port are correct.

  • You've selected the encryption method required by your provider.

  • Your SMTP username is correct.

  • Your password or SMTP token is valid.

  • SMTP access is enabled for your email account.

Authentication failed

Some providers require an app-specific password or SMTP token instead of your normal login password.

If your provider supports these credentials, generate a new one and try connecting again.

Connected, but emails aren't sending

An SMTP connection may authenticate successfully even if the provider later rejects an outgoing message.

Check that your email account is authorized to send from the configured address and that your provider hasn't restricted SMTP sending.

If the issue continues, contact Bloom Support so we can investigate.

Emails aren't appearing in your Sent folder

How sent messages are stored depends on your email provider and its SMTP implementation.

If your message was sent successfully but isn't visible in your Sent folder, check your provider's documentation or contact Bloom Support.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to use SMTP if I have Gmail or Outlook?

No. Bloom provides direct integrations with Google and Microsoft. We recommend using those options instead of configuring SMTP manually.

Can I use my business email address?

Yes, provided your email hosting service supports a compatible SMTP connection and allows sending from that address.

Is my SMTP username always my email address?

Usually, but not always. Some providers generate a separate SMTP username. Use the credentials supplied by your email provider.

Can I use my regular email password?

It depends on your provider. Some require app-specific passwords or SMTP tokens, while others require modern authentication methods that may not be supported by a basic SMTP username-and-password connection.

Does SMTP synchronize my inbox with Bloom?

No. SMTP is used to send outgoing emails. It does not provide inbox synchronization or retrieve incoming messages.

What happens if I don't connect an email account?

Bloom can send supported emails using its default sending address ending in @email.bloom.io.

Need additional help?

If you're having trouble connecting your email, contact Bloom Support through the chat in your Bloom account.

To help us investigate, please include:

  • Your email provider

  • SMTP host and port

  • Encryption method

  • Any error messages you're receiving

  • Whether the connection fails during setup or when sending an email

For your security, never share your email password, app-specific password, or SMTP token with Bloom Support.
